A Balanced Approach to Educational Technology

We are a group of Fairfax County parents, teachers, and community members committed to keeping families informed and engaged on EdTech and AI initiatives in FCPS. We advocate for evidence-based policies that prioritize how children learn, ensuring technology serves our kids, not the other way around.

1| Enact grade-differentiated screen time policy, starting with elimination of devices for younger learners. 

2| Use technology in the classroom only for instructional time or assessments. 

3| Configure developmentally appropriate default settings in existing technology, including ones that protect student privacy. 

4| Limit student-facing generative AI use to only non-core high school elective classes, with parental consent at time of enrollment. 

5| Implement whitelisting of approved websites and programs for students, grade by grade.

6| Offer opt-out of 1:1 devices and/or of specific EdTech programs.

A community where every child in FCPS is empowered to think critically, learn deeply, and grow into a capable, creative human being, supported by technology used intentionally and governed by policies that put children first.

Our mission is to advocate for a balanced approach to educational technology for the well-being of FCPS students.
